“The most precious gift that we can offer others

is our presence.  When mindfulness embraces those we

love, they will bloom like flowers.

-Thich Nhat Hanh

These days we are surrounded by so many distractions.  It seems at times that the world is in such fast motion, that it is hard to even keep up.  It also seems that the more technology that we are exposed to, the less and less interactions with people we are having.  I am guilty of it, we all are I think.  The worst is when you are out to dinner with people, and everyone is on their phone at the table.  Or when your spouse and kids are all sitting in the same room together and every single person is on some sort of device. It’s getting out of control.  We all need to spend some time away from all of these distractions, and really be present and mindful of who and what is going on around us.

Human interaction is essential.  We need to feel like we matter to someone.  The best way to be there for someone is to let them know how much you care by listening when they need it.  Expressing and sharing kind and uplifting words to those around you can change someones day.  Look others in the eye when you talk to them.  Let them see that you are listening and hearing what they say.  Make more time for the ones you love.  Call a friend on the phone and talk to them instead of just texting.  Sometimes we just need to hear the voice of a loved one.  Make sure that those around you know that they matter.  However you feel like you can show them that, then do so.  People who genuinely have an interest in people around them, and care about their needs, are the most successful people around.  They are also happier people, that seem to be more content with life as well.

If you haven’t read the book by Dale Carnegie called, “How to Win Friends and Influence People,” then I highly recommend that you do.  It teaches all about this practice of being mindful and more present.  When we become more interested in those around us, it can also help to relieve some of our own problems in life, as we take the focus off of ourselves.  Let us remember that we need each other.  We are not meant to walk this life alone.  We are not doing ourselves any good by letting distractions bury us and keep us away from the things that matter most.  If we can truly open our eyes to those around us, we will see the divinity in their eyes, the worth of their souls, and our hearts will be expanded to let more love for mankind in.  Give others around you the gift of your presence.  Lives will be brightened and souls will be enlightened.  Love will abound when we are genuine and interested in what others are doing.  We can make a difference in the world, and we can start by giving someone the gift of our presence.

Hope On. Journey On.
