“Look for something, find something else, and realize that what you’ve found is more suited

to your needs than what you thought you were looking for.”

-Lawrence Block

During my teenage years one of my favorite sayings was, “Serendipity Baby!!!”  My friend Cricket and her sons taught me that saying.  I don’t even think I knew what Serendipity was, I just thought it was cool to say. Serendipity means; the occurrence and development of events by chance in a happy or beneficial way. How often do you find yourself wondering why something didn’t turn out the way you had planned.  Life happens.  Often times many things don’t work out for us.  Sometimes we wonder why they don’t go in our favor, especially if we have put our heart and soul into something, only to continuously be disappointed over and over again.  What if you knew that, because that one thing didn’t turn out, was because something far better was about to unfold?  How would you then react to those disappointments?  I would guess that if we knew that something better lay in store for us, that we wouldn’t even look back at all to see what just passed us by.  What if you could just trust, that for once, some disappointments were just a small bend in the road leading to something bigger and better.

Some of you may know the Bible story of Lot and his wife.  They were told to leave the city that they were in because it was going to be destroyed.  They were told that if they looked back they would die.  How tempting it would have been to want to look back.  They were leaving their home, never to return.   Surely they were filled with some uncertainty and anxiety.  Whatever it was, fear of leaving the past behind, or not trusting that the road ahead would be better than the one they were leaving behind, Lots wife turned around, and the promise of her death was fulfilled.  How many of us have done this same kind of thing?  Always looking back into the past and wondering why something didn’t turn out.  Looking back in fear and afraid that the promise of better days, is now days long gone. How many of us are missing these possible moments of serendipity in their lives?

There have been many times in my life where things didn’t work out. Some of those things were really devastating, some were not.  But if I have learned one thing from things not turning out, I have felt that more than not, it turned out for the better.  Something good came from each disappointment.  Those random times where something happens that is completely unexpected, yet it turns out to be better than what you were originally planning or even dreaming of.  This is serendipity.  It is out there for all of us to grab a hold of, if we can just trust, that for once, there is something better out there for us.  You are something special.  You may be stumbling down the rocky road right now, but someone or something is going to happen to step out onto that road and lead you onto a new path.  A path that is smooth and comfortable, free from rocks and stones.  A path that will give you peace, understanding, hope, and enlightenment.  When you get this chance, take it.  Trust in something better, and don’t look back.  “Serendipity Baby,” will be your new motto in life!

Hope On. Journey On.
